Period instrument specialists Latitude 37 are joined by triple harpist Hannah Lane and theorbo player Nick Pollock to present a programme of musical jewels from 17th century England.
Alongside popular folk tunes of the day, both rowdy and melancholy, the programme features very rarely performed works by William Lawes. Featuring a unique combination of harp, bass viol, violin and theorbo, Lawes’ Harp Consorts display a wonderful musical interplay between these unusual instruments. Lawes’ quirky and distinctive compositional style is immediately apparent with moments of intense beauty juxtaposed with bizarre and angular themes, luxuriant pavans with jaunty airs, all in Lawes’ own unique and idiosyncratic voice.
This concert is an unusual opportunity to hear this beautiful music reflecting both the height of refinement and sophistication in the English court of the mid 17th century as well as the catchy music from the streets and taverns.
